24th Sunderland (St Joseph’s) Brownies
We met Baroness Grey-Thompson 5 years ago on a train to London. She was excited to see loads of yellow uniforms as she’d been a brownie herself. We gave her crisps and sweets and was happy to be included in our journey to London.
From there we kept in touch with her, and when we were discussing what to do in our unit for our birthday, thought it would be nice to invite her as it was our 50th birthday celebrations. In these celebrations we included UK Parliament week albeit a few weeks early. We had a lovely night which included a visit from a lady called Sharon from The Sunderland Antiquarian Society. Sharon gave a fun talk on Suffragettes, Inclusion and Diversity, and we gave them both a posy of flowers as a thank you for coming.
We have since learned that the posy given to Sharon has been thoughtfully placed on the grave of Emily Wilding Davison (the Suffragette who was killed by the Kings horse).
