Girlguiding Overseas Linked Development
As part of Girlguiding Overseas Linked with Development (GOLD) I travelled to Oman in September 2018. Throughout Oman we visited 4 different regions, Al-Buraimi, Musandam, Al-Dakhelya and Muscat. This enabled us to reach the 719 guides and leaders. It also provided an insight into Omani culture in more remote regions compared to the large city of Muscat. This was particularly enjoyable as we were able to experience the traditional food and lifestyle of each region. The regions that we visited were incredibly hospitable and friendly. We received 111 roses as welcome gifts throughout our trip! Most importantly visiting different regions allowed us to gain an insight into issues that are present across all regions in Oman Scout and Guides.
Training sessions for leaders focused on the benefits of guiding, how to speak about your guiding experiences and ways to recruit. We adapted our training sessions to the groups we were working with and their views on guiding, to ensure the sessions were meaningful. We also trained guides and ran informal sessions on decision making, teamwork, leadership and self-confidence. All the women and girls were enthusiastic and confident. A highlight for the team was our final session with Guide and Scout supervisors, bringing together all our sessions and allowing us to share feedback and ideas for the future.
Tourist attractions were also explored; Forts and Castles, Al Hoota Cave, Resorts, Souks and The Grand Mall. We were also fortunate to explore nature through a Dhow cruise to snorkel at Telegraph Island and an excursion to the Green Mountains. Discovering Oman as a GOLD team meant were all in the same boat when unearthing new experiences throughout our adventure. No one knew what privileges and surprises would be in store for us; we all grew both as a team and as individuals. Bonding as a group means we have a guiding support network for life.
